Planning your holiday now, help your wellbeing.

Why planning your uk campsite stay for 2021 will help your wellbeing.

Plan your uk Campsite holiday now.

2020 is the year that the Queen may call “annus Horribilis” with Covid parts 1 and 2, and  with most of us have not being able to participate in activities, such as work, seeing family, shopping, let alone caravanning and camping, it is no wonder that we may feel like we are chomping at the bit to get away.

The world is looking very different from what we are used to seeing and I applaud you all for the different ways in which you have adapted and overcome difficulties in your lives. So why do I now suggest planning and even booking your holidays for next year? There are, as you may imagine many a reason, and one of them is the “real richness” (Camping and caravan club) and the anticipation of an event, in this case a trip away.

In this article I will be looking what evidence is out there to show that camping and caravanning can support our wellbeing and what impact these trips have and discuss how you too can enrich your life from the comfort of your living room.

The evidence.

The camping and caravan club have created a download called ‘Real richness, the list’, https://www.campingandcaravanningclub.co.uk/newsandevents/get-rich-quick/  In it they look at the emotional richness that caravanning and camping can provide in this digital world in which we live. According to the the list those who camp regularly (caravanning and camping) are happier, more optimistic, energised and 76% are more satisfied as opposed to 59% of non campers. 2000 adults were asked the same questions, 1000 of them who camp regularly and the final 1000 who have never camped at all. The study was carried out by John Moores University in 2011.

This is not a new thing, in the first and second world wars nature therapy was provided for soldiers who were recovering from injuries sustained in battle, in fact recent studies have shown that a person who can see nature whilst recovering in hospital will recover sooner.

“A study published in 1984 in the journal Science by environmental psychologist Roger Ulrich, to demonstrate that gazing at a garden can sometimes speed healing from surgery, infections and other ailments.

Ulrich and his team reviewed the medical records of people recovering from… surgery at a suburban hospital. All other things being equal, patients with bedside windows looking out on leafy trees healed, on average, a day faster, needed significantly less pain medication and had fewer post surgical complications than patients who instead saw a brick wall.”  https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/nature-that-nurtures/

The results

If being in nature, and in our case, camping or caravanning, what impact can it have on ourselves and that of our families.

Thomas Hiram Holding, the founder of the camping and Caravanning Club in 1901, said the following…

Personally, I like camping so much better than the hotel…appart from the economy of camping, it is a real luxury in it’s freedom’.

The real richness list gives us 7 areas that the John Moores University study found and believe have effects on us and our loved ones.

1. It promotes family cohesion, satisfaction, togetherness and fulfilment

2. It encourages rest, relaxation and restoration

3. It facilitates children’s learning and has a positive effect on behaviour

4. It improves social interaction

5. It makes us feel better –mentally and physically

6. It creates memories, traditions and special places that stay with you for life

7. It really does make us happier!

(Real richness, the list, Camping and caravan club)

These are vital to the wellbeing and the growth of a person, what ever age they are, to create a more resilient and well rounded individual.

Having to wait for an event to happen, has a massive effect on a persons health and wellbeing. In the current climate, the more we can do to support these areas including, our mental health too, can only be positive. In the National Geographic magazine they looked at how planning a trip in advance can support your emotional wellbeing, in ways you may not have realised. https://www.nationalgeographic.co.uk/travel/2020/05/heres-why-planning-a-trip-can-help-your-mental-health

According to a study by them in 2013, they linked travel to enhanced empathy, attention, energy and focus. In 2014 Cornell university carried out a study looking at the planning of a trip. They found that anticipation of a trip, wherever that trip may be, can increase a persons happiness substantially. This supports the Real Richness list evidence as well.

In 2002, the University of Surrey completed a study where one of the findings showed that people are at their happiest when they have a trip planned.

I must say personally, I can remember as a child knowing in December that mum and dad had booked the ferry crossing for our caravan holiday for the following July, was not only very exciting, but kept me going during the winter blues and many a piece of homework for school.  The delayed gratification that I would have experienced, was a akin to waiting for presents at Christmas.

What now?

What are you waiting for is the question I have to ask, get your book out of camping, caravanning or motorhome sites that you can drool over. Create a plan of action, where would you really like to travel to? I know that for those of you that tend to take yourselves and your vehicles abroad, that this may not be an option, but you can have a fantasy “I am going abroad’ plan, and a more probably, but no less exciting uk holiday. The Caravan and motorhome club have now opened the booking’s so that you can book up to a year in advance.

Research, Visit, love.

Make your holiday amazing, with holiday gems.

Snainton, Yorkshire.

When we went away in the summer to the beautiful county of Yorkshire, we stayed at a lovely site in Snainton. We did some research of the area, visiting Beck Hole waterfall, Scarborough, Whitby and Robin Hoods Bay to name a few. We had a wonderful week and realised how amazing this country we live in is and more to the point how much of it we have not yet explored.

Now in November we have spent a number of evenings watching different programmes from all sorts of places and many interesting and some less interesting different topics.

Stay with me here, I do have a point to this!

We love watching bangers and cash, it’s a programme following a company called Matthewsons Auctions.

https://yesterday.uktv.co.uk/shows/bangers-and-cash/

The programme is fab for all of you who love classic cars and other mechanical pieces. They visit different parts of the country to collect cars etc for auction. We knew they were in Yorkshire, we had seen the name of the village where they are based, but had we taken any notice, not really. It was not till a month ago, when we watched one of the episodes where the proprietor and a couple of his team were walking round the village, that we realised in horror that we had actually stopped at the very same village after visiting the waterfall. To say we were annoyed is being polite. We even went into a small shop about 100 yards from the auction house. We could not believe what we were seeing, and on closer Internet inspection, we realised it was about 11 miles from where we were staying!

So when your caravan is all serviced, and ready to rock and roll once again, really look at where you are going to stay, find those gems that make the holiday amazing.

Winter shutdown service.

Getting your van ready for its winter hibernation

Everyone who decides to put their caravan away for the winter needs to make sure they have drained down the water in the system. Just like pipes in the home, if they are full of water when the frosts and cold weather appear, it can split the pipes and cause damage to the system.

A winter shut down service will not only get that completed for you, but check over the caravan and complete a basic damp inspection too.

If you are interested and want to book your caravan in for the winter shutdown down service, there are two ways of getting in contact.

  1. Call me on 07765242851
  2. Click The ‘Contact today’ button and I will be in touch ASAP.

STORING YOUR VAN FOR WINTER? Clean and air your equipment.

This time of year, some of us have hung up our van keys and are allowing our caravans a good and well earned rest. If this is you, then just remember to do a couple of things to make it easier when you go back to venturing out in the new year.

  1. If you are not wanting to drain your van down, then just complete the following. A. Open your taps to drain excess water. B. Take down the shower head and open that tap too, leave them open, this will allow any water to expand without cracking anything.
  2. Take home bedding so it can be aired and kept fresh. This is also a good time to clear out your cabinets and clean the shelves and draws.
  3. Have a look around the van, in and out to check anything that needs repairing or looking at by a specialist.
  4. Finally, book you vlcaravan in for a service.
  5. RING 07765242851 OR click the book today button and I will get in touch as soon as possible.

Competition time.

Win 25% off, any one service.

Yes it is competition time, to mark the 1st October and a little under 3 months till Christmas, PC mobile caravan servicing is holding a competition, for 25% off one of our services.

What do I have to do?

I hear you cry, well, I want to hear the funniest stories you have from the many years you have been caravanning. It could be anything, if I were to enter, it would be the time my nan lost her teeth after a long night of drinking, this is a woman who’s quite prim and proper, grandad tried to find them and had to ask the rest of the merry crew for a torch, needless to say there were many jokes about grass cutting and chewing the cud!

But what are your funny stories? let me know via email: paul_cresswell@yahoo.co.uk or via the contact page.

Tyres Just check.

Don’t take chances.

Blow out, shredded tyre.

The image above is a sight that you never want to witness, let alone have to react to whilst towing your caravan. This blow out happened at a relatively low speed, but was still on a motorway. Thankfully the slip for the next exit was there at the right time and they were able to carry on with awareness for the other vehicles and also themselves. The first reaction is to panic, and that may then result in the body producing more adrenalin and this can lead to you placing more force on the accelerator and thus going faster, ruining the wheel and potentially causing an accident.

The number one thing you should do is…

Check the tyres before you set off! obvious but not always something that is part of your check list. You are excited to be going away and the sooner you start the sooner you will be able to sip that glass of something cold whilst watching the world go by.

“TYRES ARE ONLY FLAT AT THE BOTTOM” someone once said!

The Caravan and Motorhome club, give us the following advice for when tyres need to be replaced.

Two or three factors can make them deteriorate in a different way, even with careful use.

  • All tyres age and deteriorate due to exposure to sunlight and atmosphere, even if not used.
  • Caravan tyres can suffer fatigue due to the repetitive small impacts they suffer in everyday use.
  • Being stored for long periods of the year without use can put undue strain on one particular part of the tyre.

Best camp site and why?

VIEW OVER EAST YORKSHIRE

Some of us this year have had to be quite selective, as to where we go away in our caravan due to C – 19!. The picture above was from a lovely site in Snainton, Yorkshire. The site was flat, and well kept, but that was not the reason why it is our current favourite.

There can be many factors that make a site great, from having a good view to being in walking distance of great pub. This year however the criteria has been different. I think my wife would have happily stayed in a field, I on the other hand like a clean and well maintained toilet block. However, as I said this year our criteria was vastly different, this camp site represents a week with both our children, our daughter in law (to be) and our granddaughter, oh and let’s not forget Brian our dog. For us, it was special, being all together for the first time since Christmas, and was the best week ever.

So tell me, what is your best site this year and why?
